Days Shangri-la Trekking Tour
|
Includes:
Kunming, Zhongdian, Xiangcheng,
Daocheng, Litang & Chengdu
In the late 1920s, American
explorer Joseph Rock, ventured
here and discovered a group
of three peaks more stunning
than any he had ever beheld.
The peaks are known to Tibetans
as the Konka Risumgonpo or
the Konkaling peaks. The three
peaks Chenrezig, Chanadorje,
and Jampayang are named after
and believed to contain the
essences of three Tibetan
bodhisattvas. Like Mt. Kailash
they are circumambulated by
Tibetans from near and far.
Besides our own past expeditions,
no guided treks have ever
been into this area. The Chinese
government has long restricted
foreigners from getting anywhere
near the peaks. Our goal is
to travel through Kham to
its border with Muli Tibetan
Autonomous region and enter
into the Konkaling mountain
sanctuary. We will travel
around the three peaks stopping
at several monasteries enroute
completing our trek on the
wildflower strewn alpine pastures
in the middle of the three
mountains. We will also have
the opportunity to witness
the annual horse festival
in Litang, which takes place
in August each year. The most
magnificent festival in the
region, thousands of Tibetans
gather for the festivities,
setting up colorful tents
on the grassland. We will
also visit Litang monastery,
one of Kharm's major monasteries.
Over 10,000 Khampas take part
in the festival. For the opening
ceremony Tibetans from areas
all around don spectacular,
colorful traditional clothing
and ornaments. The smell of
weisang (Juniper) fills the
air. A long parade of lamas
takes place. And then the
horse races begin. Other activities
include yak racing, stunt
riding, and archery, as well
as folk dancing and singing.

We'll
have an early start
today so we can have
more time to explore
this picturesque remote
Tibetan town. At an
altitude of just over
4000m, this is one of
the highest towns in
the world (Lhasa is
3700m). Situated high
on a grassy plateau,
Litang has the feel
of a rough and tumble
'Wild West' town. Khampas
- dressed in yak skin
coats, bedecked in colorful
necklaces and hair ornaments,
long daggers hanging
from their belts - from
the surrounding areas
amble into town to stock
up on food and supplies,
play pool on the streets
and hang out in the
local teahouses. This
small town is great
for people watching
and just strolling around. |
